Backplay is the area of the field behind the point of attack of the team in possession.

As the team in possession progresses up field, the parts of the game that cannot, or choose not to, keep up with play are said to take place in backplay. It is common for injuries,[1] foul play, fights,[2] and other off the ball incidents to remain or occur in backplay.[3]
