Captain
A captain is the on-field leader of a team and a point of contact between their team and the referee. It can be a player of any position. Some of the captain's responsibilities are stipulated in the Laws of the Game.
Before a match, the two teams' captains toss a coin with the referee. The captain that wins the toss can decide to kick off or can choose which end of the playing field to defend. The captain that loses the toss then takes the other of the alternatives.[1]
When a player "repeatedly breaks the Laws in a 'specialist' position" (hooker or scrum half, for example), the referee should inform the player's captain when issuing a final caution, so the captain has the opportunity to move the player to another position.[2]
The International Laws give team captains responsibility for appointing a substitute, should a referee suffer an injury during a game.[3] Some competitions, particularly those played at senior levels where more match officials are used, have established different procedures for replacing an injured referee. In the UK, the Rugby Football League names the fourth official as being a reserve referee.[4]
