Laurie Nichols
Laurie Nichols was a well-known supporter of Australian club Balmain Tigers.[1] Away from the game, Nichols worked as a woolclasser.[1]
Sometimes Nichols' dedication to Balmain brought him into conflict with others.[1] Ray Chesterton cited two stories when he wrote about Nichols: "He was once about to fight a man who, despite warnings, had continued to criticise the Tigers. As they went to walk outside, the barman said, 'Don't fight him. He's got a plate in his head', Laurie said, 'I don't care if he's got the whole dinner set'."[1] Another time, someone claimed "that 'I once made the bench for Australia', Laurie fired back: 'What are you, a carpenter?'"[1]
During the Super League war, Nichols was involved in the campaign to save Balmain.[2] He died just four days before joint venture club Wests Tigers played its first game.[1]
In 2010, during NRL Grand Final week, a short documentary film about Nichols, titled Number One Fan, was screened.[2]
