Marker
From Rugby League Wiki
Marker is a role that a member of the defending team may carry out at the play-the-ball. Following each tackle, one of the defending team may take up position on the opposite side of the ruck to the tackled player.[1][2] The defending team's acting halfback takes up position behind the marker.[1] Both the marker and his or her acting halfback are now commonly referred to as first marker and second marker, and together as the markers.
[edit] Development
Originally, the marker was able to strike for the ball during the play-the-ball. Later, the laws were changed so that this was no longer permitted.
