In a rugby league football context, the Wigan way is a name of a cultural ethos advocated for the Wigan Warriors club.

A notable proponent has been Shaun Wane who said, "Culture. This is Wigan. Playing okay is not acceptable, being second best is not acceptable". He has also said, "we will be fitter than we have ever been", "we will do contact like we have never done before", and "we will do things the Wigan way". Phil Clarke, a former Wigan player noted Wigan's three-man tackling techniques as being the result of playing "the Wigan way".[1]

The phrase features in the Wigan supporters' song, Ancient and Loyal Upon My Chest, with the line "a team that played the Wigan way" when recalling winning teams of the past.

The term is used in other contexts in the town of Wigan. Generally the term means to achieve the maximum with what, sometimes little, is available.[2]
